Whey Protein: Benefits, How to Use, & More!

Whey Protein: Benefits, How to Use, & More!

From helping with muscle recovery and muscle growth to supporting lean body goals and helping control hunger for weight loss, protein is a very important nutrient your body needs.

Some people might have a harder time getting enough protein, especially if they are active, so they turn to protein powders, and more specifically, whey protein.

But what are whey protein benefits? And how can it help you achieve your goals? Let's crack open the lid and dive in!

First Off: Why Supplement With Whey Protein Powder?

Protein Shake what fits your lifestyle

Protein is an important nutrient for building and repairing in our bodies (bones, cartilage, skin, blood, hair, nails, enzymes, hormones, and other body chemicals), helping with muscle recovery after exercise, reducing soreness, and even helping support muscle growth.

Simply put, whey protein powders are designed to help increase your protein consumption. They are convenient and easy to use, making them great options to help support your total daily protein needs.
If you are currently following an exercise plan and…

  • Wanting to boost muscle recovery
  • Trying to watch your calories in an effort to build a lean, strong physique
  • Struggling to consume enough protein each day
  • Looking for a tasty way to help curb cravings while staying on track with your eating plan

...then a good whey protein supplement can come in handy, and here’s why: Whey protein isolate powders tend to be lower in calories, fat, and carbohydrates compared to other protein powders.

We’ll get more into that in just a little bit!

Whether you’re looking to lose weight, tone up, or even gain muscle mass, a well-formulated whey protein powder can definitely help!

How Much Protein Should You Consume Each Day?

To help eliminate any protein confusion, here are 2 ways that you can use to calculate a range of how much protein you should be consuming!

Research suggests that active people should consume anywhere from 1.2 - 2 grams of protein per kilogram of bodyweight.

The easiest way to find out how many grams of protein you should be consuming every day is to first convert your weight to kilograms by dividing it by 2.2.

Then you'll multiply that number by any number ranging from 1.2 - 2 to get your ideal protein consumption range for the day.

Here's an example:

Current body weight: 170 lbs
170 / 2.2 = 77.3
77.3 x 1.2 = 93 grams
77.3 x 2 = 155 grams

So your ideal protein range per day is 93 - 155 grams

If you'd like more of a specific number of grams of protein to consume each day rather than a range, try the method Heidi uses:

So for example, if you weigh 170 pounds, 80% of your bodyweight would be 136 grams of protein!

If you struggle to consume enough protein, especially if you exercise consistently, or if you are trying to increase your protein consumption while trying to watch your carbs and fats (and even calories), whey protein powders can be a BIG benefit!

Notice we said “can” because it really depends on the protein powder you choose. We’ll get more into that later in the blog.

Whey Protein Powder Benefits

whey protein benefits sore muscles

So, what are some big benefits of whey protein powder? Whey protein powder helps...

Amazing, right?

And if you exercise regularly, then you have greater protein requirements since your muscle breaks down and needs to be repaired compared to someone who doesn’t.

So now that we’ve covered some BIG whey protein powder benefits, let’s get into some more advantages that protein powders can offer.

Additional Whey Protein Powder Benefits

Ease of Use

One massive benefit of protein powder is how convenient it is to use.

With protein shakes, you can generally take a scoop, throw it in a blender bottle with milk or water, shake it up, and you’re good to go!

This makes it super easy to use, especially if you are on-the-go or need a quick source of protein, like after your workout.

And guess what?

You can even throw a scoop of protein powder in the blender with additional ingredients and whip up a shake or smoothie.

And if you are big into cooking and baking, you can add it into some of your favorite recipes!

Helps With Macro Counting

If you are a macro counter, then you’ve most likely had days where you were deficient in one macro but close to going over in another.

A nice protein shake can help boost your protein while limiting carbohydrates and fats.

Faster Absorption
Compared to other types of protein, whey protein is known to be absorbed and utilized quickly, which is great for refueling after training.

Different Types of Whey Protein

Whey protein is a very popular form of protein powder. It gets its name from the whey it contains, which is a byproduct of the cheese-making process.

Whey protein is considered a complete protein as it contains all 9 essential amino acids, and this is important when it comes to supporting post-workout recovery.

There are a few different sources of whey protein. Let’s take a look at them:

  • Whey Concentrate: 70-80% protein, contains lactose (milk sugar) and fat and is known to have a delicious flavor
  • Whey Isolate: 90% protein or higher, contains less lactose and fat
  • Whey Hydrolysate: AKA hydrolyzed whey, pre-digested for faster absorption and causes 28-43% spike in insulin levels compared to isolate

Benefits of Whey Protein Isolate

During the whey protein isolate manufacturing process, much of the lactose is filtered out as well.

If your goal is to build a lean, strong physique, whey protein isolate is a great option, and here’s why: It contains less fat, sugar, and calories compared to other proteins.

This means you can dramatically increase your protein consumption each day without adding an excessive amount of calories.

Additionally, as a whey protein supplement, it’s more rapidly absorbed than other proteins (like casein) and is put to use fast!

When to Use Whey Protein Powders

For most protein powders, mix 1 scoop of 8 oz of water or your beverage of choice and consume it after your workout, or any time you’re needing to supplement with additional protein.

The biggest thing is to focus on consuming protein at every meal. This tip is actually a fundamental principle we teach, and it’s included in our Foundation 5 Principles.

How to Find the Best Tasting Whey Protein Powder

When it comes to selecting the best whey protein powder for you and your goals...

  • It has to taste amazing on its own with just milk or water—no other ingredients needed.
  • It has to be something you look forward to consuming.
  • It needs to satisfy your cravings.
  • It has to mix well.

Simply put, it has to taste absolutely delicious no matter what!Over their three decades of combined transformation expertise, Chris and Heidi tried hundreds of different protein powders and workout products.

None of them “had it all.” Some tasted “ok,” but the nutritional profile wasn’t optimal. Some didn’t taste good at all but had a better nutritional profile. Some didn’t mix well.

Chris and Heidi realized that they needed to create a protein powder that would stand above the rest, help support workout recovery and lean muscle goals, and “WOW” the socks right off of everyone who tried it.

That’s exactly why Trainer Lindsey poured all her experience into making her delicious Signature Line with Vanilla Creme Broulee and Chocolate Dipped Cone.
